The brain especially human brain is a deep mystical puzzle. Even with today’s technology, aspects of human brain uncovered every day seem to amaze scientists and science in general. The Human brain is like a Rubik’s cube with different sides as functional parts of the brain. Sight, Sound, and perception are all parts of that Rubik’s cube that amazes science to this day.
First of all, sight is truly an amazing human brain function. Though one might argue that sight is a result of human eyes, it is the human brain that translates what eyes perceive. Sight from the eyes is converted to common “brain currency” in the form of electrochemical impulses. These impulses then travel millions of neurons in the brain and make synaptic connections in order to make sense of sight and store it in the form of memory. As a baby, one learns to objectify sight in the form of memory which acts as a foundation for adults who later translate sight and make connections in the memory of what they see. If these crucial years of infanthood were spent blind, the brain would simply be “overwhelmed by sight” It would not be able to handle the overload of information sent by the eyes and make connections to understand or translate sight. It would take adult years to see and translate through his infant’s eyes if infanthood and adolescence were spent blind. According to studies carried out by doctors in California, to understand sight and perception one may wear goggles that twist the sight itself by making objects in the left appear on the right and vice versa. This twisted perception is simply an example of how eyesight is overrated since sight alone cannot define the outer world. One cannot exit a maze or drive on roads without understanding the concepts and rules. Eyes simply gather data to update information that’s already stored as memory. Another aspect of sight is that human brains pick up information from the sight of the need to know basis. The Brain sees what it wants to see in a painting and edits all the other unnecessary details. Not to say that details are not there but brain picks up sight on a “need to know” basis. Hence, sight is truly an amazing human function.
Next, the perception of sound is just as amazing as sight. Though light travels faster than sound, human reacts more quickly to sound than light. This could be demonstrated with a help of an experiment on the racetrack. On the racetrack, if one was to use a gunshot and flashlight to start a race, the latter would result in a slower start. Also, deprivation of sight and sound would result into “daydreaming”. If human brain was to be isolated from sight and sound, it would perceive its own reality. “Visual cortex sends its internal expectations to the thalamus and thalamus compares that with what’s coming from the eyes”.
Lastly, perception is another aspect of the human brain that amazes science to this day. “Part of reality that we can see is totally limited to our biology” Starting off with color, it does not exist in the real world but perceived by the human brain. Similarly, different types of waves like sound waves, radio waves, electromagnetic waves that exist in nature are not picked up by human perception. “Synesthesia is one of the few conditions that makes it clear that someone else’s reality is different” than others. Wiring in the brain may lead to different realities. “From person to person, brain to brain” perception of reality can be extremely different. Furthermore, though most people forget dreams to go on with their daily lives, some people experience dreams in their daily lives. People suffering from different disorders like schizophrenia see things that others perceive in their dreams. Another, twist in human perception is an interpretation of time. Certain events or behavior that induces fear also speeds up or slows down time for different people. Hence, the internal brain clock does not always follow time.
In conclusion, Sight, Sound, and perception are all parts of that Rubik’s cube that amazes science to this day. “Reality is perceived differently by different people”. This branch of science is often tied to economics. New products and innovations in technology and medicine result directly from this branch of science.
